England and Wales: Southern England Deer Stalking.

Roe, Fallow and Muntjac Deer Stalking

The estate is set in the heart of Hampshire just one hour’s drive from London and is considered to be one of the top shooting locations in the south of England. The perfectly managed rolling valleys provide ideal terrain to stalk Roe and Fallow deer.

Fantastic UK stalking. One would think that most of stalking
in the UK would be approached by jeep due to the large estate, but Mr Richard
Scrope (the Stalking guide) believes that every hunter should earn their prize.

In Faccombe the art of stalking is being quiet. Fallow deer
are very jumpy so the first twig break can spook the entire herd. During the
evening hunt we found it difficult to find the fallow but instead we saw plenty
of healthy and sizable Roe along with three Muntjac, of which I was not there
to shoot.  Later in the evening we
saw 18-25 fallow but were unable to get a safe and clear shot.

We were up just before sunrise, a healthy breakfast and out
the door. Straight away there were 10 roe within the first 2 main areas of the
stalk but no Fallow. With this in mind Mr Scrope changed direction back to the
truck as he felt that we might have better luck in another part of the estate.
Sure enough we saw 2 herds 10-15 strong moving through the woods. We drove on
for another 5 minutes and got out, prepared for the second stalk through the
woods. minutes of silent stalking we found a herd with 4 large healthy males
and I was in range. Once I got my instruction to shoot I was able to get 2
before the rest ran off.

Mr Scrope and Faccombe Estate thank you for a fantastic and
memorable 2 days

The Stalking

The estate offers the option of stalking by foot or from one its many high seats. The deer manager has stalked on the estate for 18 years and is as resourceful and knowledgeable a stalker as you are likely to find. He will accompany you during the stalk however he will allow experienced stalkers to take the lead if requested. The prime time to conduct the stalk is either at dawn or dusk when the deer are most active and you will be advised prior to arranging your visit as to the best time to come dependant upon local conditions.

Location

The estate is located near Newbury, a one-hour drive from London. Around the area are the historic cities of Winchester and Salisbury as well as the mystical Stonehenge. All of which are worth a visit between morning and evening stalks.

Accommodation Options

There are a wide number of locations where you can stay prior to or after the days deer stalking which we can arrange depending upon your requirements. A couple of examples:

  • Esseborne Manor: The Manor is located on a hill overlooking the Bourne Valley, which is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The Manor has been converted from a private country retreat in to a stylish hotel whilst retaining a homely feel. Esseborne Manor is located 5 minutes by car from the estate.

  • The Jack Russell: Located within the village of Faccombe is the Jack Russell pub, which is a very quaint and friendly local pub. They offer B&B accommodation

The best time to go is mid July to mid September as earlier in the season the antlers can still be covered by velvet.

Roe Buck: April 1st – October 31st
